Keil is the name and removing hair from the heads of man, woman and child is the game of this long time barber shop. Not to many barber shops around anymore displaying the universal symbol of a proud profession, the barber pole. Connie and Gary also are snipping and grooming right along with Keil. On Saturday morning this place is a-buzz’en.

Behind the counter stands Pilar Gonza’lez with the most beautiful smile and a warmth that says, “Welcome to Sassafras Bakery”. “I love doing this” she tells me. “I enjoy”. That’s all folks. Fresh baked bread was the aroma I enjoyed entering EL TIKAL Market. The flavor of this enchanting little grocery store is totally of Mexico. Servicio De Paqueteria: Mexico Guatemala, Y Centro America. Jefersson, he wrote his name for me, is charming and speaks his native language, no English. Still we are welcome to this new enterprise in Historic Downtown Fremont.

One more example of the diversity of Downtown Fremont, Nebraska, The INSURANCE Center. When I popped inside this neat little space two big smiles instantly greeted me. Betty and Skip needed only one second of my explaining why I was there. “You bet, we would love to have our picture taken” was the reply when I told them of my project to photograph each and every merchant in Historic Downtown Fremont.
